Seville & America

At the start of the 16th century, Seville became the connecting point of the "old" and "new" worlds and from that time until now the link between the Andalusian capital and the American continent has continued to strengthen.
We at Sevilla Now! aim to encourage you to discover the special relationship that Seville has maintained with those territories which, at first, Christopher Columbus believed to be the Indies!

During the tour we will visit, amongst other places:

  • Torre del Oro: we start by the Guadalquivir river which, due to it's navigable waters, secured for Seville the commercial monopoly with America in the 16th century thus raising it to its position as one of the capitals of the world at the time.
  • Archivo General de Indias: a place housing all the documentation that came from the New World... although it was not always thus:we will discover the origins of this fine building and it's subsequent evolution.
  • Plaza de España: During the first third of the twentieth century this area of the city was completely renewed, once again with the help of the Americas, when the Ibero-American Exposition was celebrated in 1929. We conclude our tour in the Plaza de España,one of the most emblematic monuments of Seville and symbol of the aforementioned ephemeris.
